"Alghero is like no other Italian city. Five centuries under the crown of Aragon have left a historic centre that feels like Barcelona facing the sea — stone alleys, ramparts over the Mediterranean, paella next to bottarga."

Alghero is the only city in Italy where Catalan is still spoken today. Five centuries under the crown of Aragon have left an unmistakable historic centre: narrow stone-paved alleys, Gothic churches, ramparts running along the sea and a cuisine that blends paella and bottarga, aragosta alla catalana and pane carasau.
The city has around 45,000 inhabitants, but in summer it multiplies. It is the heart of the Coral Riviera — one of the most spectacular coasts of north-western Sardinia — and the Alghero-Fertilia airport (AHO) makes it one of the most accessible destinations on the island: direct flights from all over Italy and much of Europe, 15 minutes from the terminal to the historic centre.
We at AffittaSardegna directly manage 12 properties in Alghero since 2011 — from the studio for two in the historic centre to the two-bedroom flat for five 200 metres from the Lido. No intermediaries, no algorithm offering you a "similar" home 30 km away: you talk to us, we know every property, and if a last-minute backup is needed we find it in the same area.
The coast surrounding Alghero — the Coral Riviera — is considered by many the most spectacular of north-western Sardinia. Six beaches reachable in less than half an hour, each with a different character.
In town, a 5-minute walk from the centre. Fine white sand, equipped with beach clubs, perfect for families who want to come home for lunch.
3 km to the north. Centuries-old pine forest behind it, brilliant white sand, gently sloping seabed suitable for children. The one most frequented by Alghero locals.
7 km to the north. Emerald-coloured water, one of the most photographed in Sardinia. Paid parking in high season.
Next to Le Bombarde, but with smaller, quieter coves. Incredibly clear water, rocky seabed excellent for snorkelling.
15 km to the north, inside the bay of Porto Conte. Enclosed bay with always calm waters, ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding and swimming.
25 km to the north. Wild, 2 km long, frequented by surfers. No beach clubs, a natural atmosphere.
Alghero's historic centre is completely pedestrianised and can be explored on foot in a few hours. It is small but dense — every alley tells something, and the atmosphere at sunset is one of the highlights of a holiday in Sardinia.
When you rent a home with us, we help you build the holiday you really want. Here are the experiences we recommend to first-time visitors — and those our regular guests ask us about most often.
One of the most spectacular sea caves in the Mediterranean, beneath the cliff of Capo Caccia. It can be reached by boat from Alghero (a scenic tour of about 3 hours) or by land, descending the 656 steps of the Escala del Cabirol. The boat tour is preferable on windy days because the stairway closes for safety reasons.
The largest winery in Sardinia, founded in 1899, 10 km from the centre. Vineyard tour, visit to the historic estate, tasting of Vermentino and Cannonau. Excellent for hot afternoons when the sun is too harsh on the beaches.
Alghero's signature dish, served whole with red onion, tomato, celery and extra virgin olive oil. We recommend three restaurants that are not in the international guidebooks — write to us on WhatsApp and we will give you the names.
60 km² of protected nature north of Alghero. Trekking, cycling excursions, birdwatching. Don't miss the lake of Baratz, the only natural lake in Sardinia, reachable after a short walk through the woods.
30 tombs carved into the rock, 4500 years ago. One of the most important in the Neolithic Mediterranean, 10 minutes from Alghero. Combined ticket with the Grotta Verde beneath Capo Caccia.
To explore the Coral Riviera a car is practically indispensable. We compare prices for our guests through Discover Cars — average saving of 35% compared with the airport desk.
Alghero has a privileged microclimate — sheltered from the mistral winds by the headland of Capo Caccia, it is one of the mildest places in Sardinia. You can come from April to October with excellent results.
