📍 What Alghero is

Alghero is the only city in Italy where Catalan is still spoken today. Five centuries under the crown of Aragon have left an unmistakable historic centre: narrow stone-paved alleys, Gothic churches, ramparts running along the sea and a cuisine that blends paella and bottarga, aragosta alla catalana and pane carasau.

The city has around 45,000 inhabitants, but in summer it multiplies. It is the heart of the Coral Riviera — one of the most spectacular coasts of north-western Sardinia — and the Alghero-Fertilia airport (AHO) makes it one of the most accessible destinations on the island: direct flights from all over Italy and much of Europe, 15 minutes from the terminal to the historic centre.

We at AffittaSardegna directly manage 12 properties in Alghero since 2011 — from the studio for two in the historic centre to the two-bedroom flat for five 200 metres from the Lido. No intermediaries, no algorithm offering you a "similar" home 30 km away: you talk to us, we know every property, and if a last-minute backup is needed we find it in the same area.

In Alghero, Catalan is not tourist folklore. You find it in the street names ("L'Alguer"), in trattoria menus, in festivals such as Sant Joan. It is a city that has kept a very strong identity — and you feel it walking along the ramparts at sunset.

🏖️ The Beaches of the Coral Riviera

The coast surrounding Alghero — the Coral Riviera — is considered by many the most spectacular of north-western Sardinia. Six beaches reachable in less than half an hour, each with a different character.

🏖️ Lido di Alghero

In town, a 5-minute walk from the centre. Fine white sand, equipped with beach clubs, perfect for families who want to come home for lunch.

🌲 Maria Pia

3 km to the north. Centuries-old pine forest behind it, brilliant white sand, gently sloping seabed suitable for children. The one most frequented by Alghero locals.

🌊 Le Bombarde

7 km to the north. Emerald-coloured water, one of the most photographed in Sardinia. Paid parking in high season.

🪨 Lazzaretto

Next to Le Bombarde, but with smaller, quieter coves. Incredibly clear water, rocky seabed excellent for snorkelling.

⛵ Mugoni

15 km to the north, inside the bay of Porto Conte. Enclosed bay with always calm waters, ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding and swimming.

🏄 Porto Ferro

25 km to the north. Wild, 2 km long, frequented by surfers. No beach clubs, a natural atmosphere.

🏛️ The Historic Centre

Alghero's historic centre is completely pedestrianised and can be explored on foot in a few hours. It is small but dense — every alley tells something, and the atmosphere at sunset is one of the highlights of a holiday in Sardinia.

  • Bastioni di Alghero — the seafront walk at sunset is the city's symbolic experience
  • St Mary's Cathedral — neoclassical façade, 16th-century Gothic bell tower, interior a mixture of styles
  • Torre di San Giovanni — historic entrance to the centre, today an exhibition venue
  • Piazza Civica — the heart of the old town, perfect for an aperitivo at sunset
  • Chiesa di San Francesco — Gothic-Catalan cloister among the best preserved in Sardinia

⭐ Unmissable Experiences

When you rent a home with us, we help you build the holiday you really want. Here are the experiences we recommend to first-time visitors — and those our regular guests ask us about most often.

🚤 Grotta di Nettuno

One of the most spectacular sea caves in the Mediterranean, beneath the cliff of Capo Caccia. It can be reached by boat from Alghero (a scenic tour of about 3 hours) or by land, descending the 656 steps of the Escala del Cabirol. The boat tour is preferable on windy days because the stairway closes for safety reasons.

🍷 Cantine Sella & Mosca

The largest winery in Sardinia, founded in 1899, 10 km from the centre. Vineyard tour, visit to the historic estate, tasting of Vermentino and Cannonau. Excellent for hot afternoons when the sun is too harsh on the beaches.

🦞 The Aragosta alla Catalana Dinner

Alghero's signature dish, served whole with red onion, tomato, celery and extra virgin olive oil. We recommend three restaurants that are not in the international guidebooks — write to us on WhatsApp and we will give you the names.

🌳 Riserva Naturale di Porto Conte

60 km² of protected nature north of Alghero. Trekking, cycling excursions, birdwatching. Don't miss the lake of Baratz, the only natural lake in Sardinia, reachable after a short walk through the woods.

🏛️ Necropoli di Anghelu Ruju

30 tombs carved into the rock, 4500 years ago. One of the most important in the Neolithic Mediterranean, 10 minutes from Alghero. Combined ticket with the Grotta Verde beneath Capo Caccia.

🚗 Car Hire

To explore the Coral Riviera a car is practically indispensable. We compare prices for our guests through Discover Cars — average saving of 35% compared with the airport desk.

📅 When to Come to Alghero

Alghero has a privileged microclimate — sheltered from the mistral winds by the headland of Capo Caccia, it is one of the mildest places in Sardinia. You can come from April to October with excellent results.

❓ FAQ — Alghero

How much does it cost to rent a home in Alghero?
Prices range from around 50€/night for a studio in low season up to 280€/night for a home for 7 people in high season. The average price for a two-bedroom flat (4-5 guests) is 120-180€/night in July, 70-100€/night in May-June.
Is it better to rent a home or stay in a hotel in Alghero?
For stays of 3 nights or more with a family or group, renting is almost always worthwhile: you have your own kitchen, space for the children, freedom over your schedule. For 1-2 nights without significant luggage, a hotel may be more practical.
How do I get from AHO airport to the centre of Alghero?
15 minutes by car, 25 minutes with the ARST shuttle at 1€, departing every 30 minutes. The Alghero-Fertilia airport is 10 km from the city centre. If you have booked with us, we send you precise directions via WhatsApp 48 hours before check-in.
Do the AffittaSardegna homes in Alghero have air conditioning and Wi-Fi?

It depends on the property — some are pet-friendly, others are not. Write on WhatsApp stating the size and number of your pet, and we will tell you straight away which homes are available.
How many days do you need to visit Alghero?
A minimum of 4 nights for the city and the beaches of the Coral Riviera plus the Grotta di Nettuno. A whole week if you also want to include the Sella & Mosca winery, the Riserva di Porto Conte and a day in Stintino-Asinara.

Yes, but do not expect to hear it on the street as much as Italian. It is recognised as a minority language, spoken by the older generations and taught in schools. You find it in the street names ("L'Alguer"), in traditional menus, in festivals such as Sant Joan.
Is Alghero suitable for families with children?
Very much so. Maria Pia beach has a gently sloping seabed, the historic centre is completely pedestrianised and safe, and there are numerous playgrounds (Parco di Porta Terra, Lungomare Dante). The Lido di Alghero has beach clubs with summer baby-clubs.
Can I pay in instalments or is everything due immediately?
