What Porto Torres Is

Porto Torres is a city of around 22,000 inhabitants facing the Gulf of Asinara, in north-western Sardinia. It is the busiest ferry port in the north of the island — anyone arriving here from Genoa, Civitavecchia or Barcelona is on the beach in 10 minutes.

Founded by the Romans as Turris Libisonis in the 1st century BC, it was for four centuries the main commercial port of the western Mediterranean. When you walk along the seafront, the remains of the Roman pier are still visible below the sea level. When you enter the Basilica di San Gavino, you cross the largest Romanesque church in Sardinia.

For AffittaSardegna, Porto Torres is the headquarters since 2011. This is where the founders began, this is where the team works every day, this is where you have the guarantee that if you have a problem at 22:00 you can reach us in five minutes. Not a call centre: people who live in the same place where you go on holiday.

Porto Torres is a city that gets on with its work. It isn’t a tourist resort built for holidaymakers — it’s a real place that the season makes use of, not one that depends on the season to exist.

The Beaches of Porto Torres and Around

Three stretches of coast around Porto Torres: a city you can swim in, the long and quiet Platamona, and Stintino-Asinara reachable in 30 minutes by car.

Balai Beach

In town, a 5-minute walk from the centre. Fine sand, popular with locals, seasonally equipped. The everyday beach for those who live in Porto Torres.

💧 Acque Dolci (Balai Vicino)

A sheltered cove with crystal-clear water, popular for snorkelling. A rocky seabed, full of fish. A more intimate atmosphere than the main Balai.

🌅 Renaredda

1 km from the centre. A longer beach, equipped with beach clubs and bars. A good choice for families looking for amenities.

🌊 Platamona

15 km east. The longest continuous beach in north-western Sardinia: 8 km of white sand broken only by dunes. Ideal for walks at sunset.

Marina di Sorso

18 km east. A continuation of Platamona with a centuries-old pine grove behind it. Crystal-clear sea, a wild atmosphere.

La Pelosa (Stintino)

40 km west. The most famous beach in Sardinia, reachable in 30 minutes from Porto Torres. Capped access in high season, booking required.

History: A Heritage Beneath Your Feet

Porto Torres is one of the most archaeologically rich cities in Sardinia. The layout of the modern city still follows the Roman plan, and every district hides ancient remains.

  • Basilica of San Gavino — the largest Romanesque church in Sardinia (11th century), dedicated to the three Turritan martyrs Gavino, Proto and Gianuario
  • Turritano Antiquarium — archaeological museum with extraordinary Roman finds, admission €4
  • Roman Bridge over the Rio Mannu — 7 arches from the 2nd century AD, still standing and crossable
  • Central Roman Baths — an archaeological area open to visitors in the heart of the city
  • Monte d’Accoddi (12 km) — the only pre-Nuragic ziggurat in the Mediterranean, unique in the world, built 5,000 years ago

Must-Do Experiences from Porto Torres

Porto Torres’s strategic position gives you a 50 km radius that covers the best of northern Sardinia without having to change accommodation.

🏝️ Asinara National Park

From Stintino (40 km) or Porto Torres you set off by boat to the island that was a maximum-security prison until 1998. Today it’s a national park: white donkeys, unspoilt beaches, the former prison open to visitors. A full day that’s worth the trip to Sardinia. Book ahead in July and August.

⛴️ Day Trip to Bonifacio (Corsica)

From Santa Teresa di Gallura (75 km) you take the Moby ferry and in 50 minutes you’re in France. Going abroad for lunch and coming back in the evening is one of the unexpected highlights of a holiday in northern Sardinia.

The Wineries of Vermentino di Gallura DOCG

From Porto Torres you can reach the award-winning wineries of Berchidda, Tempio Pausania and Monti in an hour. Vineyard tours, tastings at fair prices (€5-10), direct purchases. One of the best wine experiences in Italy that isn’t yet overcrowded.

🚗 Car Hire

Having a car in Porto Torres is essential to make the most of its strategic position. We compare options for our guests through Discover Cars — average saving of 35% compared with the airport desk.

🌊 Tourist Fishing and Boat Trips

The port is active 12 months a year. Trips with local fishermen, responsible tourist fishing, snorkelling in secret coves. We organise them for you via WhatsApp.

The Real Sardinians’ Dinner

Porto Torres has a strong, barely touristy local cuisine: cordula, cassola turritana, sea urchins in season. We tell you the three restaurants where the people of Sassari go at the weekend.

When to Come to Porto Torres

Porto Torres is a real city, not a holiday village — it’s alive 12 months a year. That’s a big difference from the other northern destinations: even in low season you have supermarkets open, pharmacies, restaurants, neighbourhood life.
