"Castelsardo is the kind of place that stays with you the first time. A 12th-century castle perched on a promontory of volcanic rock, elderly women weaving baskets as they have done for four hundred years, crystal-clear sea at the foot of the village."

Castelsardo is a medieval village of around 5,700 inhabitants, perched on a promontory of volcanic rock that juts into the Golfo dell'Asinara. It is one of the few places in Sardinia that has kept its medieval atmosphere intact: narrow stone alleys climbing up to the castle, glimpses of the sea at every corner, elderly women sitting outside their homes weaving dwarf-palm baskets as they have done for four centuries.
It has been certified a "Bandiera Arancione village" by the Touring Club Italiano and is part of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia". These are recognitions that are not advertising: they are the result of real architectural conservation.
We at AffittaSardegna directly manage 8 properties in Castelsardo since 2011. A concentration of large houses and small villas designed for groups and extended families. While the competition has specialised in mini-apartments for couples, we have chosen the opposite niche: the house for 7-9 people where grandparents, parents and cousins all stay together.
Castelsardo's historic centre is one of the most charming in Sardinia. It can be explored entirely on foot in 2-3 hours, but to truly savour it you need at least two days.
Castelsardo is surrounded by a coast that alternates volcanic cliffs and sandy beaches. The distances are short: the main equipped beach is 2 km from the castle.
2 km from the centre. The main equipped beach, light sand, sandy seabed suitable for families. The one most chosen by locals and by guests looking for convenience.
4 km to the east. Long, sandy, frequented by Sardinians. A quieter atmosphere than Lu Bagnu, free parking.
15 km to the east. One of the most beautiful in the gulf, crystal-clear sea, sandy seabed. Worth the drive.
8 km to the west. A wild cove, accessible on foot along a scenic path. An intimate atmosphere, perfect for those seeking isolation.
3 km to the east. Pine forest behind it, wide, equipped. Excellent for families with children and for full days.
10 km to the east, in the municipality of Valledoria. Light sand, mouth of the Coghinas, ideal for water sports and windsurfing.
About a dozen long-standing craftswomen of Castelsardo still weave dwarf-palm baskets for hours outside their homes, sitting in the alleys. You buy directly from them, see the basket take shape, pay a tenth of what a shop in town would ask. None of them stops you for a photo: they are unique pieces at 15-40€.
4 km towards Sedini. A natural monument of trachyte sculpted by the wind over thousands of years, with a pre-Nuragic tomb carved inside. It can be visited free of charge, with adjacent parking.
From Valledoria (10 km to the east) you set off by canoe, descending the Coghinas river among reed beds and natural oases. You reach the sea two hours later. A little-known experience, perfect for active families.
The hinterland of Castelsardo is dotted with small family wineries of Vermentino and Cannonau. Authentic tours, low cost (3-5€ tasting), products you won't find in supermarkets. The network is still not touristy.
15 km from the village, long-established stables organise horseback excursions across the Gallura landscape. Suitable also for beginner children and for those who want to see the hinterland at a slow pace.
Castelsardo is one of the very few places where you find authentic zuppa gallurese — stale bread, sheep broth, mountain-pasture cheese, cooked in a wood-fired oven. We recommend the two right trattorias in WhatsApp chat.
To explore the Golfo dell'Asinara you will need to move around: Castelsardo is central but the beaches are spread out. We compare prices for our guests through Discover Cars — average saving of 35% compared with the airport desk.
