🐾 Your dog deserves Sardinia just as much as you do. Knowing where you’re welcome — and when — is the difference between a proper holiday and a stressful stay. Here’s the guide we give our guests every season.
AffittaSardegna — since 2011
Taking your dog on holiday to Sardinia is entirely possible — and a real pleasure — provided you know where to go. The rules vary from one municipality to another, change every year and are not always clearly signposted. This guide is based on 15 years of experience in property management in northern Sardinia and hundreds of customers who came with their dogs.
The short answer: April–June and September–October These are the best times of year to visit with a dog. Here’s everything you need to know.
There is no single national rule governing dogs on Italian beaches. Each local authority sets its own regulations, which generally follow this pattern:
⚠️ Regulations change every year. Always check the local council’s official website before you set off.
The northern part of La Pelosa beach has a section where dogs are allowed. In June and September, it’s at its best: peaceful, with crystal-clear water and Asinara in the background.
Please note: La Pelosa has restricted access. Your dog does not need a separate ticket, but you do. Book in advance at lapelosastintino.it
A long stretch of beach between Porto Torres and Sassari, with a pine forest in the background. It remains far less crowded than Stintino as it is the locals’ beach. Easy access, calm waters, and dogs are allowed all year round in the undeveloped areas.
The municipality of Porto Torres maintains a designated dog-swimming area on the town’s beach. It is accessible all year round and clearly signposted. Ideal for guests staying at Porto Torres.
The public beaches around Castelsardo — including Lu Bagnu — allow dogs outside peak hours in summer and at any time during the off-season. The combination of the medieval castle in the background and the calm waters makes it one of the most pleasant dog-friendly spots in northern Sardinia.
The northern part of La Cinta — one of Sardinia’s longest beaches — is dog-friendly in the off-season. With its shallow, warm waters, the lagoon in the background creates a stunning natural setting.
✅ Best time to visit: April–June and September–October
Moderate temperatures (not harmful to paw pads), quiet beaches with few restrictions, more accommodation available and significantly cheaper.
⚠️ Possible but challenging: July–August
Hot sand can hurt their paw pads — wet it down first. Most tourist beaches ban dogs during swimming hours. It’s manageable, but it requires proper planning.

Yes, but there are conditions. During the high season, dogs are not allowed on the main tourist beaches during swimming hours. Designated dog-swimming areas are available in several towns. Outside the high season, most public beaches allow dogs.
September is ideal — the sea is still warm, the beaches are almost empty, there are no restrictions, the weather is mild and prices are much lower. May and June are also excellent.
The northern part of La Pelosa has a dog-friendly area. During the high season, access to the main beach requires a booking (for you, not for your dog separately). Le Saline — also at Stintino — is a lovely alternative with no booking required.
