In 1353, the Crown of Aragon conquered Alghero and began a Catalan colonisation that would forever change the city's DNA. The original inhabitants were expelled and replaced by Catalan settlers — from that moment on, Alghero would speak Catalan, build in the Catalan Gothic style and maintain an Iberian culture at the heart of the Sardinian Mediterranean.
Six hundred years later, Algherese survives still — one of the last Catalan-speaking communities outside Catalonia. The walled historic centre, the Aragonese towers reflected in the sea, the Cathedral of Santa Maria: every stone tells of this extraordinary historical anomaly.

The red coral of the Mediterranean — Corallium rubrum — has its centre in Alghero. The waters of the Riviera del Corallo, the stretch of coast between Alghero and Bosa, are home to some of the richest and most prized red coral colonies in the Mediterranean. For centuries Alghero has been the world centre of the artisan crafting of this precious material.
The Museo del Corallo in Alghero tells this story — from traditional fishing to the tools of the coral fishermen, to the coral jewellery pieces that have crossed the centuries. A small but unique museum — nothing comparable exists elsewhere in the Mediterranean.
