“At the Tuesday market in Sassari, you’ll find the same woman selling pecorino cheese who’s been there for thirty years. She knows every customer by name. This is a Sardinian market — not a tourist attraction.”
The Wednesday market at Alghero and the Tuesday market at Sassari are easily accessible from across the North-West. But the location you choose makes all the difference — distances, parking, and return times.

Supermarkets sell Sardinian produce. Weekly markets sell Sardinia. The difference is substantial: at the market, the farmer from Osilo brings his pecorino cheese, the lady from Ittiri her homemade sun-dried tomatoes, and the fishmonger from Porto Torres the sea urchins caught this morning. No middlemen, no calculated shelf life, no packaging.
For a tourist staying in a self-catering holiday home — the perfect option for Sardinia — the weekly market is the first must-visit stop: you can buy authentic produce at local prices and cook the same dishes as the locals.
📅 Every day (mornings)
The historic covered market in the centre of Sassari, on Via Usai. Permanent stalls selling fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, cheese and cured meats. The market on Thursdays and Saturdays is livelier, with more outdoor stalls. Open from 7.00 am to around 1.30 pm.
📅 Tuesdays and Saturdays
The large weekly open-air market at Sassari, near the historic centre. Hundreds of stalls: food, clothing, household goods, plants. Tuesday is the traditional day for local farmers — the best day for fresh produce.
📅 Thursday morning
A neighbourhood market frequented almost exclusively by locals. Fresh local produce at rock-bottom prices. An authentic experience far removed from the tourist crowds in the city centre.
📅 January (17 Jan)
The traditional fair in Sant’Antonio Abate, featuring handmade crafts, local food and livestock. An annual event that’s not at all touristy — it’s the locals’ fair.
| What | What to do |
|---|---|
| Time | Be here by 9:00 am — the best products sell out quickly. In the summer, they finish before 9.00 am. After 11 o'clock, you'll find the leftovers |
| Payment | Bring cash. Many shops don’t accept cards, especially rural ones |
| Handbag | Bring your own bag or cool bag — plastic bags cost money and the ones from the market stalls are flimsy |
| Car park | At Sassari, look for the blue zones as soon as possible. At Alghero, use the seafront car park and walk over |
| To treat | It’s not about the price of fresh food. It’s (a bit) about clothing and crafts |
| Language | Italian is fine. But if you smile and say “bonu die” (good morning in Sardinian), the tone changes |
You’ve got the kitchen, you’ve got the recipe – all that’s missing is the actual shopping. The AffittaSardegna properties all come with a fully equipped kitchen — designed for those who want the real Sardinia, not hotel-style service.
